The Teich delta and its bird sanctuary offer a wide, open view of the Leyre. Further upstream, the river narrows to such an extent that the branches meet above the water. For those already familiar with the river basin, this is a good reason to make the journey: the contrast is immediately apparent.
The gallery forest provides almost constant shade and the water stays cool. When the sand becomes too much to bear and the coastal car parks are full, the river offers a more pleasant alternative, about 25 to 35 minutes’ drive away depending on whether you’re setting off from Le Teich, Gujan-Mestras or La Teste-de-Buch.
The 6 km route takes half a day, including the journey, leaving the rest of the day free. The 13 km walk in the afternoon is a good option if you’re already busy in the morning. The full-day options, 13 or 20 km, on the other hand, require you to set aside the whole day: you’ll be back in the late afternoon.
The ‘Ô’fil de Leyre’ river trips take place upstream, between Moustey, Saugnac and Belin-Béliet, where the river is flanked by gallery forest. The Teich delta is part of a different, protected environment.
Allow around 25 to 35 minutes, depending on your starting point. Allow for a margin: if you are more than 15 minutes late, the departure cannot be guaranteed.
